Cobalt Institute's Director General Dinah McLeod looks back at what the association has achieved during in 2024 and looks ahead to a challenging and productive 2025.
Dear colleagues,
As we approach the end of 2024, I’ve been reflecting on the progress we’ve made over the past year in promoting cobalt as a cornerstone of the energy transition.
From discussions at UN Climate Week as part of the World Economic Forum’s energy transition initiative, to the launch of the groundbreaking “Cobalt 2050” research, the Cobalt Institute has been working tirelessly to highlight cobalt’s essential role in achieving a net zero future.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without the invaluable input and support of our members – thank you.
One of our most significant achievements this year was the publication of Cobalt 2050: Unlocking Potential for a Net-Zero Future, developed with BloombergNEF. This landmark report – the first of its kind for any energy transition metal – demonstrates how cobalt is indispensable to meeting global net zero targets by 2050.
We also launched the Just Cobalt Decarbonisation Pathway project, a data-driven analysis of how the cobalt industry can decarbonize its value chain. This initiative underscores our commitment to advancing sustainability and ensuring that the transition to net zero is both just and achievable.
On the policy front, we published our manifesto for the 2024 European Elections, urging the incoming European leadership to foster an industrial policy that supports the cobalt sector through higher incentives and fewer barriers. We’ve also advocated for regulatory certainty to enable the EU’s cobalt industry to thrive.
Across the Atlantic, we partnered with the Wilson Center to produce a report on policy options for strengthening the cobalt sector in the United States, further solidifying our role as a global thought leader in the critical minerals space.
2024 also saw the delivery of the third year of the Cobalt Learning Group (CLG). Available to all Cobalt Institute members, the CLG is a peer learning group enabling companies to meaningfully implement environmental and human rights due diligence. Throughout the year we held eight virtual sessions and issued quarterly digests covering topics including nature and biodiversity, responsible contractor management, Scope 3 emissions, due diligence legislation and import bans.
Globally, we have continued to support market access for our members and have observed the use of Cobalt Institute data expanded to additional jurisdictions. We also initiated data and knowledge generation to address tricky scientific and regulatory subjects that can have far-reaching impacts on the cobalt value chain.
The Institute’s experts also had increased interaction with key stakeholders and have continued to be trusted global counterparts on a variety of key cobalt topics.
Throughout the year, the Institute has been proactively representing our members at key industry events around the world. At each event, a common theme emerged: the race to secure critical minerals is accelerating, yet significant financing gaps remain. Addressing this challenge will be a key focus in 2025.
Looking forward, we are excited to announce that planning is already underway for the 2025 Cobalt Congress in Singapore. This flagship event will bring together leaders from across the industry to explore the future of cobalt and its critical role in the global energy transition. You can take advantage of early bird rates by registering now.
Thank you for your continued support and collaboration. Together, I feel confident we’re making great strides in ensuring that cobalt remains at the heart of a sustainable future.
Wishing you happy holidays and a great start to 2025!
Yours,
Dinah
