Vanadium ore resources of the African continent: State of the Art
2023, Ore Geology ReviewsCitation Excerpt :In the western part, the Man Shield comprises Archean rocks metamorphosed during the Liberian Orogeny (2.5–3.0 Ga), whereas the easternmost side was affected by tectono-thermal reworking during the Eburnean (i.e., Birimian) orogeny in the Paleoproterozoic (1.9–2.3 Ga) (Dorbor, 2010). The craton margins are defined by Neoproterozoic Pan-African belts (ca. 550 Ma) (Fig. 2) (Gunn et al., 2018). The Archean part of the WAC in the South is a granite-greenstone terrane comprising older granitic gneisses and migmatites.
Gold potential of the Pan African Trans-Sahara belt and prospect for further exploration
2020, Ore Geology ReviewsCitation Excerpt :Mineralization can sometimes be hosted in hornfelsic rocks adjacent to granitoid intrusions with attendant hydrothermal alteration indicated by the presence of epidote, sericite, tourmaline magnetite and hematite in the host rock (Garba, 1996). The Pan African Trans-Sahara belt, though is less endowed with gold when compared to older orogenic belts in the neighbouring WAC (Robertson and Peters, 2016; Gunn et al., 2018; Marignac et al., 2016; Wright, 1985), however, it is similarly mineralized like the Brasília fold Belt and Borborema province in Brazil (Pires et al., 2019; Pires et al., 2016; Araújo et al., 2002; Araújo et al, 2005; Souza Neto et al., 2008), which are considered as the southward extension of the Trans-Sahara (Neves, 2003; Caby, 1989; Castaing et al., 1994; Dada, 2008; Arthuad et al., 2008; Guillot et al., 2018; Goldfarb et al., 2001). The Trans-Sahara belt contains reasonable amount of gold mineralization across the northern and southern segment, with about 160 t reported so far including reserve and exploited, but this does not include unreported amount mined by artisanal miners.
