Characteristics and Coal Bed Methane (CBM) Potential of Cerrejon Formation (Guajira Basin, Colombia) Coals

Abstract

Colombia is one of the world's leading producers of high-quality bituminous coal. The country's proven coal reserves of 4.881 million tons (Mt) are the largest in South America.

The La Guajira Basin is located in the north of the country, near the coast, and has historically accounted for a large portion of the country's domestic natural gas production. The San Juan coal field is located in the La Guajira Basin and has significant potential.

The coal seams within the Cerrejon Formation (La Guajira Basin) are numerous, varying in thickness from a few centimeters to 6 meters. The approximate analysis results for San Juan coal are as follows: moisture content (% weight) 16.2, ash content (% weight) 6.8, volatile matter (% weight) 35.2, fixed carbon (% weight) 41.9, total sulfur (% weight) 0.49, and calorific value (kcal/kg) 6300. Based on the vitrinite reflectance coefficient (0.5-0.7% Rm), the Cerrejon Formation coal in the San Juan coalfield (Guajira Basin) can be classified as high volatile bituminous coal.

Studies have shown that Colombia's proven coal reserves of 4,881 Mt have significant coal bed methane (CBM) potential. According to the National Hydrocarbon Agency (ANH), coal bed methane (CBM) reserves are estimated to be between 11 and 35 trillion cubic feet (Tcf).

From a sustainable mining perspective, coal gasification is considered a good option, taking environmental factors into account. The underground coal gasification project, in particular, should be considered an indicator of Colombia's environmental sensitivity. The proximity of the coal field to the coast also provides a significant logistical advantage. Due to the impact of the coal industry on the Colombian economy, favorable policies and regulations exist in the country to encourage capital investment.
