The Difference Between Jarositic Zones Associated with Pyrite and Chalcopyrite???
About ten years ago, during mineral exploration in Kerman Province, Iran, I noticed a striking difference in the colors of jarosite–goethite zones associated with copper mineralization compared with those dominated by pyrite.
In copper-bearing zones, jarosite–goethite alteration exhibited a distinct orange color, even in areas where copper mineralization was not exposed at the surface. In contrast, pyrite-rich zones were characterized by brown to dark brown, almost burnt-brown colors.
This field observation became a valuable exploration clue, helping us trace and discover the continuation of the mineralized zone in the area.
Later, while reviewing the literature, I found an excellent discussion of this subject in Economic Geology by Professor Shahabpour. His remarkable book is a truly outstanding compilation of knowledge and insights in the field.
I thought this observation, along with the relevant discussion from his book, would be worth sharing with fellow geologists and mineral exploration professionals.

One of the most important weathering products is the gossan. Gossans are assemblages of iron oxides and hydroxides formed by the oxidation of iron sulfides, particularly pyrite and chalcopyrite, which develop on the surface of sulfide deposits as a result of weathering. These assemblages are also known as iron hats and iron caps.

rson (1981) and other researchers demonstrated that gossans consist of three principal minerals: goethite, hematite and jarosite. Each of these minerals has a characteristic color:
- Goethite: reddish-brown to orange.
- Hematite: purple-red.
- Jarosite: golden yellow.
Mixtures of hematite and jarosite indicate the presence of copper mineralization, while mixtures of jarosite and goethite indicate copper mineralization associated with chalcopyrite. The presence of chalcopyrite alone indicates the occurrence of pyrite (Guilbert and Park, 1997).. Each of these minerals has a characteristic color:
